Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch paid a $1.05 million fine to the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) last month after ICE cited numerous technology-related problems with the company’s electronic I-9 system.

“Employers are responsible … for the internal systems they choose to utilize,” said an ICE official. “This settlement should serve as a warning to other companies.”

The lesson: Do your own due diligence; don’t rely solely on your I-9 vendor.
