Q. Employees at our construction company sometimes work more than 40 hours in one week, but far fewer than 40 the next. We have been transferring the extra hours to the next week. Can we do this? — F.H., Tennessee

A. No. You’re required to pay employees based on the work completed in each workweek by itself. If an employee works more than 40 hours in that workweek, you must pay overtime to the employee.
