Cautious employers are adding hours, not jobs

While the economy is improving, national unemployment still hovers stubbornly near 10%. One reason: Employers are still nervous about adding new staff. However, more are extending the hours of employees they already have.

The average work hours of private employers recently rose to 34.2 hours per week, the highest since January 2009, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Paying more overtime keeps a lid on expenses compared with paying benefits for new workers.
