Employers: Schedule a health reform checkup

Health plan decisions that employers will be forced to make in a few years—such as whether to keep coverage or drop it and pay a fine—will be influenced by decisions you’ll make this year and next, said Michael Aitken, SHRM’s director of government affairs. That includes whether your health plan will try to retain its “grandfather” status.

“It might be a wise investment right now to sit down and do some modeling.…You don’t want to be rushing around at the last minute making these changes,” Aitken said.

A recent SHRM survey says about one-third of employers have done some analysis of the law, while another 15% plan to conduct such an analysis (see box below).
