Apple Inc. is a $30 billion company, yet it offers fewer than 30 major products. The company’s incredible revenue-to-product-line ratio is due largely to one factor: Steve Jobs’ focus.

“I’m actually as proud of … the things we haven’t done as the things we have done,” says Jobs.

One example: Jobs felt pressure in the late 1990s to develop a personal digital assistant (PDA) to compete with the BlackBerry and Palm Pilot. But he realized that smartphones soon would offer as much capacity as PDAs, thus shrinking the PDA market. So, he decided to pass.

“If we had gotten into [PDAs],” Jobs says, “we wouldn’t have had the resources to do the iPod.” And we all know how successful that product line has been.
