I have met so many wonderful and influential people in my 21 year career in administrative support. 99 percent of whom have been grateful for me being in the position. I have never felt ‘less than’ or been made to feel that way, and am lucky, VERY lucky enough to say that I have been duly appreciated and rewarded in my positions. Don’t get me wrong this job has its moments, but when someone looks at you and says, “Thank G you were here,” it makes a huge difference. I now work as an EA in Bioscience where we have had many discoveries translate into trials and treatments. That is important work to support, and let’s face it, could they do it without us?? And, to have an employer that encourages professional development, for me, has made a world of difference.

That is a great question! Early in my working career I decided that being a “secretary” was a great job field with wide opportunity for growth and even travel. As the Administrative Professional designation took hold, the idea that this is a “real” area of expertise has been one that has levels and standards has also grown. Using one’s own likes and dislikes, strengths and interest areas by targeting industries or institutions or even individuals is a good way to chart a satisfying career-growth path. Once you have found an area, idea or cause you are enthusiastic about and enjoy supporting, then it is just a matter of keeping up with the people IN that area and targeting the support position for the power-positions within it. This will lead to higher salaries greater autonomy and job satisfaction, but be aware that each level above the one you are in, requires more skill sets and usually a superior grasp of the soft-skills — people management. You are lucky in that there are organizations out there today–such as this one–to help with both. Administrative support is a great field to be in — enjoy the ride!
