Question: Has anyone implemented "FiSH! Philosophy" in your workplace? Other than parties and luncheons, in what ways has it been integrated into the work or workplace? What has been the employee response?  -- Lisa


Yes, our office has attended a FISH presentation. It is a feel good philosophy. The theory is great but, I have to be honest, (and this may sound cynical) but if you are a miserable person or your attitude towards the workplace or your co-workers stinks, there is a reason. A person has to be pleasant to other people and carry a good attitude with them because it is in them. You can expose people to philosophies all day long, but if they don't live it, they won't reflect it. FISH has some really great ideas to team build, though. We all came back feeling good about our team, and one of our team flushed everyones enthusiasm down the toilet real fast. (because she is a miserable person-everything about her life is miserable and she just wants everyone around her to be miserable).

In my last job the company instituted a really fun program using the Fish philosophy. There were displays and everyone saw the video. The best part was a rewards program. Every employee received blank cards printed with cute fish that they could write in and give to other employees who exhibited one of the parts of the philosophy. The cards went into a "fish bowl" for a monthly drawing for prizes. It really raised the culture and the workplace mood and satisfaction!

We had the program at a previous (very large) company. Some people were cynical, others, didn't care, but for those that actually took the time to send a fish card to someone who actually helped them, it was a nice way to let them know that you noticed. After all, the "company" doesn't notice.

There were monthly drawing for gift cards - and you could be entered if you received a card. I think that causede some resentment and altered the intent of the system.

I sent about 10 cards in 3 years and all who received them were pleased and surprised that I actually took the time to think of them. In that respect it was a good experience.

Could someone tell me what the FISH philosophy is or is there a website to go on?

We did the FISH training here as well and it's great.

We actually have monthly moral buiders and feel good things we do. We have a committee called LAUGH and every month, they do something for the staff. I was on it, but now I like to go to the functions and just attend and be part of it so I did my tenior then I handed it over.

Anyhow, every month is something. Every other month, we get something fun left on our desk. Feb was cinnimon hearts for V-Day. Then on the other months, we have an actual function. Jan was the staff holiday part. March, we just did our own version of the amazing race with staff. It was great. Last april, we slip opened m&ms and left them on the desk empty for APril fools. The actual candy was in the kitchen. It was a hoot.

We have great success with this and everyone has come to expect something and look forward to it.

Get a group together, put on your caps, and come up with stuff. You will be amazed at what you can do for staff and morale for little to no cost to the company.

I wondered, too, what FISH was. I went to Google and searched "FISH Philosophy" and found all sorts of information. Good luck!

I can't give any information on how to implement it but one of the groups in my former department did and the turnaround in their attitude and their engagement has been amazing so I recommend it!
