I work at a private physicians office and had to look up this info not too long ago. There are several different requirements for records - Fair Labor Standards Act (29 CFR 516.2-516.6 and 516.11-29). OSHA (30 years). Health and Human Services (Lots of info 42 CFR). IRS (26 CFR 31.6001). FDA (29 CFR 1627). Employers Retirement Security Act (29 USC Chapter 18). Welfare and Pension Plans Disclosure Act (29 USC 308). Federal Employee's Compensation Act (20 CFR 10.410). and the Civil Righs Act and Equal Pay Act (29 CFR 1602.14).
But don't forget to check your own state's requirements. You should be able to find them on the state's web page under "Document Retention and Distruction"
