It doesn’t hurt that Chicago-based accounting firm Grant Thornton offers flexible work schedules, commuter spending accounts, dependent care and an employee assistance program.

But execs there—and employees—attribute the organization’s culture of long-term retention to what they consider a family-like environment at their branch offices, where co-workers celebrate each other’s successes.

So if someone passes a CPA exam, the achievement is honored during the firm’s annual awards banquet. If an employee has a pet charity, chances are, a group of colleagues will pitch in to support it during a community-service project.

The 32,000-employee global organization launched a “Women at Grant Thornton” committee to help women with work/life issues and career development. The firm offers a $10,000 adoption reimbursement, flextime, telework and 80% tuition reimbursement. New hires start with three weeks’ vacation during their first year.
