Q. We recently fired an employee because of insubordination and anger-issues. The termination meeting, not surprisingly, didn’t go well and the employee became very agitated. He made some statements that could be interpreted as vague threats against his supervisor and our company. Is there anything we can or should do to protect ourselves from this former employee?
A. This is a difficult and trying scenario. Private employers have the right to exclude unwanted and uninvited persons from their premises. If he comes back to your workplace, you can ask the former employee to leave immediately. You should tell him he is trespassing and that you will call the police if he does not leave immediately.
Of course, you should call the police right away if you observe any threatening behavior or actions.
Another option, in some circumstances, may be to seek a harassment restraining order from a court. In Minnesota, employers can obtain these court orders when there has been a physical assault (touching) or repeated verbal threats (oral or in writing).
Should the former employee then violate the order, the police could charge him or her.
