Take steps to make a ‘newbie’ welcome

“The first day of work,” says an anonymous administrative assistant on her blog, “is like the first day of school ... overwhelming.” You have to make new friends, learn the new rules, get to know a new teacher.

Even a seasoned admin may feel out of sorts, which is why some admins take steps to bring a new team player into the fold.

Administrative assistant Jerrilynne Jankowski of PPG Industries recommends welcoming new hires by taking their pictures and posting them in a high-traffic area.

Welcome a newbie with these tactics:

  • Organize a team lunch on the new hire’s first day.
  • Place a welcome note and picture on the company intranet.
  • Create a banner signed by the team.
  • Meet informally to share specific expertise or answer questions.
