How to put off interrupters

When you’re on deadline and a colleague interrupts, be respectful and treat co-workers the way you’d like to be treated. Generally, you can avoid hurt feelings by offering a quick question of your own such as: "Can I have 5 minutes (or hours) to finish this and get back to you?" or “I’m sorry, I’m on deadline. Is it urgent or can you put it in an email?” And do remember to follow up. Also, ask yourself--since you’ve already been interrupted--does it makes sense to just listen to what she has to say rather than having her come back later to interrupt again? Always keep in mind that the interruption may be even more urgent than what you are working on.
