Shortly before midnight on April 18, 2011—the deadline for filing 2010 federal income tax returns—the IRS announced that a record number of taxpayers had e-filed their returns. (IRS Internal News Release 2011-46, 4/18/11)
By early that morning, the IRS had received nearly 101 million e-filed returns for the 2011 tax season, representing an 8.8% increase from the prior year. A late surge in e-filing pushed the number past the record for 2010, when 98.7 million tax returns were e-filed.
The IRS is also approaching the milestone of 1 billion tax returns filed electronically since the e-file program went national in 1990.
Nevertheless, the IRS says it will consider encouraging e-filing through various means.
