Utica-based Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York and the New York City Human Rights Commission are two of 13 recipients of U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) grant funds meant to aid victims of immigration discrimination.
Recipients may use the money to assist discrimination victims, conduct immigration rights training for workers and employers, distribute educational materials in various languages and produce advertisements educating workers and employers about their rights.
The grant was issued by the DOJ Civil Rights Division’s Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices (OSC). Part of the OSC’s mission is to enforce the Immigration and Nationality Act, which prohibits employment discrimination based on citizenship or national origin.
Note: Immigrant workers are probably more aware of their rights in the workplace now than at any time in history. Don’t assume immigrants who feel they’ve suffered discrimination won’t contact government authorities. Treat them the same way you treat all other workers.
